Auslogics Registry Cleaner

Auslogics Registry Cleaner is a good choice for home users who have some familiarity with the Windows Registry. This no-nonsense application performs quickly and reliably, with good backup and restore features combined with user guidance.

Registry Cleaner looks for errors such as missing files or devices and invalid entries in categories like as Add/Remove Programs, Fonts, Shortcuts, and Virtual Devices. The application, which presents a wizard-like approach, defaults to the recommended quick registry scan option. This will scan six problem areas. Advanced users can choose from 10 additional categories, such as Classes & Active X Objects and Software. Scanning is quick–a couple of minutes for a registry of 80,000-plus keys–and fixing is even faster. You can view the details of all the proposed changes and uncheck specific ones you don’t want made.

As one would hope, Auslogics provides both informational and functional tools to minimize the risk of seriously damaging your registry. When setting up an advanced scan, you can click on each category to read a brief description of what problem the program will be seeking. For example, the program allows you to back up and restore your registry easily, and you can choose how many backups to keep and how long you want them stored. In the Program Settings menu item, you can also identify keys that you want the program to ignore.

At first we were frustrated by a seeming lack of usability features, such as a toggle for selecting or deselecting all check boxes. We eventually discovered that these features are handled through right-click menus. One problem without a fix, however, is the optional report you can view at the end of a clean. All reports are saved with the same filename, so viewing a new one will overwrite the old. Remember to save out these files if reports are important to you, because although you can view the details of past cleans through the program interface, this will be limited to data in a list box that you cannot easily send to someone else.

Although Registry Cleaner appears to work perfectly well, fixing 1,185 problems provided a performance gain of only 2 percent, according to the application. As Auslogics will tell you via in-application ads, you will not maximize your housekeeping gains unless you defrag your registry as well. Luckily, Auslogics provides this service as another free download, or you can purchase the BoostSpeed suite, which contains a number of other optimization tools. (To the company’s credit, the free version of Registry Cleaner provides all the functionality of the component found in BoostSpeed.)

Anyone looking for a fast and reliable Registry Cleaner should absolutely try Auslogics Registry Cleaner, but be prepared to download additional optimization tools to realize performance gains fully.

Free Window Registry Repair

Free Window Registry Repair is a refreshingly simple tool for cleaning up your Windows Registry. It lacks the bells and whistles offered by some programs–such as special features for uninstalling programs or managing the Start menu–but thankfully so. This is a program that does something well and doesn’t stray from that success.

The application’s straightforward presentation and clear menu make this program appropriate for most users. The program opens to a window with very simple, step-by-step instructions. You can perform a full scan or select areas to examine. Scanning is quick, and the results list shows the data and key, sorted by problem type. The right-click menu lets you open the Registry to a specific item. Each time the program fixes a set of errors (you uncheck the ones you don’t want fixed), it automatically creates a backup. This seems like a sensible and safe feature, making us wonder why most other repair makers make you manually create a restore point. Each backup is saved with a unique filename, allowing you to choose which one to reinstate via the Restore menu.

In addition to scanning, fixing, and restoring, Free Window Registry Repair offers an Options menu where you can choose keys to exclude from scanning as well as choose to create a system restore point prior to fixing errors. The program isn’t perfect–the name of the program itself has a typo, and the Help file is actually not a help file–but overall, this is a great, speedy program for all but the most novice user.

Registry Repair Wizard

Featured

This all-inclusive diagnostic program finds and repairs unnecessary registry files and hard-disk space. It also lets you manage your start-up programs and erases browsing history. Despite two trial limitations, we were impressed with Registry Repair Wizard’s solid performance.

The user interface is well-designed and easy to understand. Command buttons representing the program’s features reside on the left side of the window. Details for each feature reside on the right side. For our first task, we scanned our registry. Considering the task at hand, the program quickly found problem files. We liked that it separated the files into categories, and we were able to view the detailed findings of each category. On top of the 15-day trial period, the program only allows a maximum of 10 files to be removed. Still, we found that the program successfully removed the registry files we had selected. We were able to fully test the program’s other features. We used the start-up manager to easily disable specific programs. The comprehensive privacy eraser cleared our browsing traces, Windows temporary folders, and recent file lists of common programs without a hitch.

An organized, built-in Help feature is included. Although it’s a minor issue, the program did add a desktop icon without asking, but this is easily deleted. And even though the program is easy to use, we recommend that novices proceed with caution when dealing with their registry. But more experienced users will find this to be an essential tool for keeping their computer in tip-top shape.
